How Do I Schedule An Appointment?
The Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine is a small, specialty hospital. Thus, we are by appointment only. If you have come to CAEM in the past with any pet, please call us at 212-501-8750 or email us at [email protected] in order to schedule your next appointment. If you have never been to CAEM before with any pet, please visit the tab above labeled "Registration". You will be required to fill out a client registration form, pet history form, a drop off form and pay a $50 deposit in order to schedule an appointment. These forms must be completed prior to booking.
Can You Explain The $50 Deposit?
Sure! New clients (meaning you have never been here with any pet) are required to pay a $50 deposit in order to book an appointment. This deposit is non-refundable. It will be applied to your first exam fee with us, and will remain on your account until you are able to come in for your first exam. If you schedule an appointment and do not show up, or cancel in the same day, we will use your deposit to cover our $50 missed appointment fee.
Do You Have A Cancellation Policy?
Yes, we do. Any appointment cancelled same-day will incur a $50 cancellation fee. If you are a new client, your $50 deposit will be used as your cancellation fee if you cancel same day or do not show up for your appointment. Appointments are scheduled at 30 minute intervals, so please note if you are 30 minutes late to your appointment, this is considered missing your exam, and the same fee will apply. We are the only exclusively avian and exotics hospital in NYC, so please understand that this policy derives from our high demand with limited appointment slots.
How Should I Transport My Pet?
We require all pet appointments to be presented in a carrier. Appropriately sized carriers allow for pets to be able to stand, turn, and sit comfortably. Bird carriers may often include perches or covers. If weather is a concern, you can always use a heated or cooled water bottle wrapped in a towel to support your pet's temperature needs.
What Is Included in the $120 Physical Exam Fee?
You can think about your pet's physical exam in the same way a human physical exam would be completed. Your vet will do a full body check, looking at eyes, oral, aural and nasal cavities, body condition etc. We will take vitals, listen to breathing, heart-beat and weigh your pet. You will be able to speak to the Doctor regarding husbandry, nutrition, and any medical concerns you may have. Diagnostics, treatments, surgeries, lab-work etc are additional fees, and you will always receive an estimate during your exam if any additional fees may be necessary.
How Does Payment Work?
At CAEM, payment is due at the time of service. We understand the financial hardship that may arise when caring for a sick pet and are happy to accept all major credit cards, including Care Credit and Scratch Pay. These two options are credit cards with low or no interest rates with a range of payment plans for clients. Care Credit and Scratch Pay are independent companies and we at CAEM cannot approve you for their cards. Do You Accept Insurance?
Pet insurance functions differently than human insurance. Currently, Nationwide is the only insurance company with plans for Avian and Exotic pets. If you have a policy with Nationwide, you will still pay your bill in full at CAEM and we will provide you with your itemized receipt for you to submit to Nationwide for reimbursement. We have no affiliation with Nationwide and cannot begin a policy for you, but you can apply directly on their website here: Nationwide Pet Insurance
Do You Offer Grooming or Boarding?
Yes, we offer both grooming and boarding services! Grooming (such as beak trims, nail trims, haircuts etc.) is offered only to current patients of CAEM, meaning your pet has had an exam done by one of our vets in the last 12 months. Boarding is offered for current patients as well. Your pet needs to have had a physical exam within the last 12 months, along with having certain testing done dependent on species. Can I Call For Advice?
Please be advised that when you call CAEM, you are speaking with our wonderful reception. Our receptionists are knowledgeable as to what may be considered an emergency or medical problem, and are happy to advise you on when to come in for an appointment. You will not receive medical, nutritional or husbandry advice by calling CAEM. If you have any such concerns, please schedule an appointment to see one of our highly specialized vets, or schedule a TeleMedicine appointment to obtain more generalized advice. Where Are You Located?
We are located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan at 562 Columbus Avenue, between 87th and 88th streets. We are open between 9AM and 7PM 7 days a week, and are closed on Federal holidays.
